Writing in our world, Star books, Number combinations

We recently started our new writing unit, Writing in our World, where we will be looking at different kinds of writing in our world and creating them! We went on writing walks both inside and outside of school, where students had the opportunity to look for different kinds of writing to sketch. At home, look for different kinds of writing and talk about why it's used and what the pictures/words say/mean.

In the block center, students also have the option of creating their own signs to hang up! J.L wanted to create a NO PARKING sign.

For reading, we have been reading emergent story books or as the kids know them as "star books." These are books with strong story lines and characters which will help the students learn plot and retelling skills. We have been using puppets to also help our retells.

In math, we have been working on numbers and different number combinations. Recently, we were working on combinations of 5. We played a game using ten frames with our partners and explaining how we saw the numbers. Example: 5 can be 2 and 3 or 1 and 4.
